How long do windows last?

Installed windows have a life expectancy greater than 30 years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in its Vacuum Insulation for Windows project description (project page dated June 13, 2014, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). DOE gives it as a floor, not an average and not a figure for one frame material.

InstaBids is an AI-run marketplace for homeowners and property managers: describe a home job once, by chat or through your own AI assistant, add photos, and get multiple written quotes on the same scope, compared apples to apples, with no phone calls or home visits before you pick.

By window frame material, 38.4% of US households had “Metal (aluminum)” frames in 2020 (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 18,496, SE 0.3 points), 32.6% had “Wood” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 18,496, SE 0.4 points) and 25.8% had “Vinyl” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 18,496, SE 0.3 points). Of the same households, 35.2% had “Single-pane glass” as the type of glass in most windows (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 18,496, SE 0.4 points). We computed these from the public microdata of the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA); EIA imputed (filled in statistically) the frame material for 13.1% of the households counted and the glass type for 8.5%. Each figure is a share of homes by frame or glass, never an age of the windows or how long a window lasts.

How long it lasts, by source

On windows in US homes, a DOE Building America guideline says: “Most windows are still original to the homes; however, it is not uncommon for windows to be replaced (Figure 2).” (DOE Building America guideline, December 2012, read 2026-10-29, national)

NPS adds a line on newer windows: “Unlike historic windows, new window assemblies cannot be repaired; they can only be replaced once again.” (NPS, page last updated April 11, 2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source)

How long one window lasts depends on moisture, maintenance and the window sill.

Questions

How long do vinyl windows last?

None of the government sources we read on 2026-10-29 gives a lifetime for vinyl frames alone. DOE's figure covers installed windows of every frame: a life expectancy “greater than 30 years” (project page dated June 13, 2014, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). In our weighted tabulation of EIA's 2020 survey, 25.8% of US households had “Vinyl” window frames (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 18,496, SE 0.3 points), a share of homes and not a lifetime.

What is the average lifespan of a window?

DOE's figure is a floor, not an average: its project page refers to “the life expectancy of installed windows being greater than 30 years” (project page dated June 13, 2014, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). For older windows, NPS writes that “The windows in many historic buildings have functioned for more than 100 years” (NPS, page last updated April 11, 2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). Neither source publishes an average window lifespan.

How do you make windows last longer?

NPS Preservation Brief 9 names the main threat: “moisture is the primary contributing factor in wooden window decay.” It says of its first repair class: “Note that most of the points mentioned in Repair Class I are routine maintenance items and should be provided in a regular maintenance program for any building.” (NPS Preservation Brief 9, no issue date on the captured pages, read 2026-10-29, national) NPS weatherization guidance adds: “Caulking, weatherstripping, and replacing deteriorated glazing compound to seal air leaks should always be done before considering replacing historic windows.” (NPS, page last updated April 11, 2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source)

How can you tell if window wood is rotting?

NPS Preservation Brief 9 gives a simple test: “An ice pick or an awl may be used to test wood for soundness.” (NPS Preservation Brief 9, no issue date on the captured pages, read 2026-10-29, national) The DOE Building America guideline singles out the sill: “The window sill is arguably the most important element of the window assembly”, and “Cracked or rotting sills need to be replaced before any work is done” (DOE Building America guideline, December 2012, read 2026-10-29, national).

Do old windows have lead paint?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) writes: “Approximately three-quarters of the homes in the United States built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint.” It adds that “Old or worn lead-based paint, especially on surfaces subject to constant friction like doors or window sills, can produce chips and dust that become a hazard when inhaled or ingested.” (EPA, page last updated on June 17, 2026, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source) The DOE Building America guideline says “Lead is commonly located on old wood windows and trim.” (DOE Building America guideline, December 2012, read 2026-10-29, national)

Should you repair or replace windows?

NPS sorts window work into three categories, “routine maintenance”, “structural stabilization” and “parts replacement”, and writes: “If most of the work falls into the first two categories, the windows should be repaired.” Where “a large number of new parts are required,” NPS points instead to “a good, matching replacement window.” (NPS, page last updated April 11, 2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source) The DOE Building America guideline adds that “windows with severely deteriorated sashes may be better candidates for the latter retrofit measures”, meaning sash replacement, an insert or a full replacement (DOE Building America guideline, December 2012, read 2026-10-29, national).

In Florida

In Florida, 68.7% of households had “Metal (aluminum)” window frames in 2020 (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 655, SE 1.8 points), 16.6% had “Wood” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 655, SE 1.4 points) and 11.0% had “Vinyl” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 655, SE 1.2 points), in our weighted tabulation of the same EIA microdata; EIA imputed the frame material for 15.1% of the Florida households counted.

Of the same Florida households, 49.4% had “Single-pane glass” in most windows (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 655, SE 1.7 points); EIA imputed the glass type for 10.4% of the Florida households counted. These are shares of homes, not lifetimes.
