How much does a window replacement cost?
The survey has no line for windows alone. Its item reads "Added or replaced doors or windows", so one new entry door, a sliding patio door and a full set of new windows all fall in the same range, and the answers record neither how many openings were done nor the frame material.

Two in three of these jobs went to a hired installer: 68 percent of the door and window jobs with a reported cost were hired out, against 87 percent of roofing jobs in the same survey.
Doors and windows are not even judged alike. ENERGY STAR sets a door's requirements by how much glass it has, and notes that a glass-heavy sliding patio door still has more frame than a window, so a door can insulate better than a window of the same size.

Not every old window has to come out. ENERGY STAR describes storm windows fitted over the existing sash as an option where full replacement is hard, but only over primary windows that still open, close and are sound; rotted or broken units are a replacement job.
