For homeowners
Types of caulk: which one fits the joint you are sealing?
Choose Silicone caulk for kitchen and bath, countertop and sanitary seals (on one maker's data sheet); Acrylic latex caulk for gaps and cracks that will be painted (on one maker's data sheet); Polyurethane sealant for weatherproofing joints in concrete or masonry, wood and metal (on one maker's data sheet); Butyl rubber caulk for seams, joints and gaps on metal gutters, flashing and roof penetrations (on one maker's data sheet); High-temperature (heat-resistant) caulk for sealing around flues and chimneys (ENERGY STAR, 2008).
The right choice depends on whether the joint will be painted, whether it stays wet, which materials the joint joins, and how hot the surface gets.

| Butyl rubber caulk | seams, joints and gaps on metal gutters, flashing and roof penetrations (on one maker's data sheet) | DAP butyl rubber data sheet (2019): adheres to wet or damp surfaces; Louisiana DENR caulking lesson (undated): seals dissimilar materials (glass, metal, wood, concrete) and may be painted | Louisiana DENR caulking lesson (undated): some shrinkage will occur, and it must be applied above 40 degrees F; DAP butyl rubber data sheet (2019): paint ready time is 7 days |
| High-temperature (heat-resistant) caulk | sealing around flues and chimneys (ENERGY STAR, 2008) | ENERGY STAR sealing guide (2008): the sealant it names for the gap between a flue and its metal flashing, where spray foam is not to be used; DOE Energy Saver Guide (2022): furnace cement caulk is one of the fire-resistant materials it names for sealing around fireplace chimneys, furnaces and gas-fired water heater vents | no official source names one |
