For homeowners
Types of solar battery: which one fits your home?
Choose Lithium-ion (LFP or NMC) for installation nearly anywhere in a small footprint, per the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE); Flooded lead-acid for applications that do not pose physical risk to the battery housing, which Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) says flooded lead-acid batteries must be reserved for; Sealed lead-acid (AGM or gel) for difficult or remote locations, where sealed batteries are sometimes specified (NREL fact sheet for DOE, 2002).
The right choice depends on where the battery will be installed, how much upkeep, such as adding water, you can give it, and the heat and fire risk of the battery chemistry.
| Type | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium-ion (LFP or NMC) | installation nearly anywhere in a small footprint, per the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) | DOE: "Lithium-ion batteries can store a lot of energy, and they hold a charge for longer than other kinds of batteries."; PNNL, on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries: "They are capable of operating safely at higher temperatures and are designed to have minimal fire risk." | PNNL: nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion batteries "are not as stable as LFP batteries"; PNNL: physical damage, charging past the specified voltage and excess heat can each lead a lithium-ion battery into thermal runaway, which PNNL says can cause fire and explosion |
| Flooded lead-acid | applications that do not pose physical risk to the battery housing, which Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) says flooded lead-acid batteries must be reserved for | no official source names one | PNNL: "Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive, meaning flooded LABs are very dangerous if punctured" (LABs = lead-acid batteries); PNNL: the electrolyte is topped up with distilled or deionized water, but only after the battery is disconnected from the power source and cooled to room temperature |
| Sealed lead-acid (AGM or gel) | difficult or remote locations, where sealed batteries are sometimes specified (NREL fact sheet for DOE, 2002) | PNNL: sealed lead-acid batteries do not lose any electrolyte to evaporation, off-gassing, or spillage, as flooded ones do | NREL fact sheet for DOE (2002): sealed batteries still require maintenance, even though you do not have to check electrolyte levels; PNNL, on the gel kind: "These sealed LABs are only viable if they are used with a low C-rate, or charge/discharge current" |
InstaBids is an AI-run marketplace for homeowners and property managers: describe a home job once, by chat or through your own AI assistant, add photos, and get multiple written quotes on the same scope, compared apples to apples, with no phone calls or home visits before you pick.
Post your job on InstaBids, and contractors can bid in writing on one written scope.

Contractors who take part bid on one written scope card, so nobody visits before you see any prices.
The contractor you pick may visit once before settling the final price against the percentage the bid stated.
Contractors in your trade see the scope card and your 5-digit ZIP code.
Contact details stay hidden until the homeowner picks a contractor and they confirm the connection.
Homeowners pay InstaBids nothing.
