How do I check a gutter installation contractor in Florida myself?
Compare the gutter tasks on your written scope with three optional public lookups: county contractor records in Broward or Palm Beach, DBPR's state database if a bidder hands you a state licence number, and the Florida DFS records on workers' compensation coverage and exemptions.

Which public records can I look up for a gutter installation contractor?
Use the contractor search for the county where the house sits, Broward or Palm Beach, plus DBPR's online licensee search whenever a bidder quotes a state licence number to you, and the Proof of Coverage search run by DFS for each employer on your written scope. Every lookup here is optional, and each result belongs next to its search date.

Gutter companies sell very different jobs under the same name. A coil crew rolls aluminum into continuous lengths at the curb and hangs them, a supplier-installer joins stock vinyl or aluminum sections at seams, and a third outfit may also rebuild rotted fascia or rework flashing where the shingles end. Ask your bidder which of those it is offering, because the task, not the company name, decides which record means anything. A blank DBPR search for a crew that only hangs gutters says nothing about the company by itself.
InstaBids gets you competitive written quotes without calls or home visits to bid; contractors never pay to see a request or to bid, and there is no fee during our pilot.

Ask which gutter tasks the bidder will perform before opening any state record. Hanging aluminum or vinyl gutters and downspouts, fabricating custom metal work and replacing fascia during a roof repair are separate lines on a written scope, and the statute and DBPR category text quoted below handle local gutter licences, job scope, sheet metal and roofing in separate passages.

The one place section 489.117 of the 2026 Florida Statutes names gutters, read 15 October 2026, is a clause about local licences, subsection (4)(a)3.: “A local government may continue to offer a license for veneer, including aluminum or vinyl gutters, siding, soffit, or fascia; rooftop painting, coating, and cleaning above three stories in height; or fence installation and erection if the local government imposed such a licensing requirement before January 1, 2021.”

The general job-scope test sits earlier, in subsection (4)(a)1. of the same section: “A person whose job scope does not substantially correspond to either the job scope of one of the contractor categories defined in s. 489.105(3)(a)-(o), or the job scope of one of the certified specialty contractor categories established by board rule, is not required to register with the board.”

DBPR's construction industry page, read 15 October 2026, lists Sheet Metal Contractor as a category coded CS and RS and defines it: "A “sheet metal contractor” means a contractor whose services are unlimited in the sheet metal trade and who has the experience and skill necessary for the manufacture, fabrication, assembling, handling, erection, installation, dismantling, conditioning, adjustment, insulation, alteration, repair, servicing, or design of ferrous or nonferrous metal work of U.S. No. 10 gauge or its equivalent or lighter gauge. A sheet metal contractor may also work with other materials, including, but not limited to, fiberglass." If a bidder cites this category, ask which line items on your gutter quote the record relates to.

Fascia is where gutter work and roofing work meet. Among the extra tasks DBPR's roofing definition, on the same page, places inside a roofing contractor's scope is “any repair or replacement of wood roof sheathing or fascia as needed during roof repair or replacement”. When new fascia boards appear on a gutter quote, ask whether a roof repair is part of the same job and which company does that board work.

Read the status words on any record a bidder points you to. In DBPR's list of construction questions, read 15 October 2026, the current, active answer is “Your contractor’s license is current and you may practice within your scope of work.” For delinquent, active, the answer is “Your contractor’s license was not renewed by the expiration date. The status of your license before the expiration date was active. You may not practice with this license until the status has been updated.”

Does the county also keep a record?
Possibly. Whether a county or city card exists for gutter work depends on that local government, and the gutter clause quoted in the section above speaks to it. Run the company from your written scope through the Broward or Palm Beach lookup, then ask the bidder which local card it carries, if any.

Nothing in that clause lists the counties or cities that kept such a licence, so ask the building department for your address whether one applies, and ask the bidder for its answer in writing.
In Broward, the licence-number route on the county's online lookup asks for a “CC Number:”. Ask the bidder which county issued any card it shows you.

How can I check workers' compensation coverage?
Check each employer listed in your written scope against the DFS Proof of Coverage search, as an optional step. Gutter installers spend the job on ladders at your roof edge, and DFS says the results are “a representative reflection of selected information reported by the insurance carrier”, so record the search date with the result.
Source: DFS Proof of Coverage database, read 15 October 2026.
Ask who employs the people on the ladders and whether any piece of the job, such as soffit carpentry or tying a downspout into an underground drain, goes to another business. Every separate employer is a separate search.
An owner may hand you an exemption instead of a policy, which answers a narrower question about one person. The DFS exemptions page, read 15 October 2026, says who receives one: “Exemptions are issued to officers of a corporation and members of limited liability companies - not to the business.” The sentence just before it on that page gives the consequence for that person: “Upon issuance of an exemption, the officer or member is not considered an employee of the business and may not recover workers' compensation benefits.” An exemption names one officer or member and says nothing about the installers hanging your gutters.

What should I ask for in writing about insurance?
Ask each gutter business, if you choose to, for a certificate of insurance that shows you as certificate holder for the house in your written scope. Asking is optional, and any question about what the certificate means goes to the issuer named on it rather than to your own reading.
Pair each document with a line item. When guard fitting goes to one company and rotted soffit repair to another, ask which business handles which line, so any certificate you hold names the company doing that part.
A gutter scope can grow once ladders go up. If resealing leaking end caps turns into replacing every run on the back of the house, ask for a revised written scope first and keep the older version with it, so later documents match the larger job.
How do I describe the gutter installation job before checking anyone?
Describe each side of the house that gets gutters, the material, whether runs come off a coil machine in one piece or are joined from stock sections, and the discharge point for each downspout. Photograph the corners, the fascia and the roof edge too, so all bidders read one written scope.
Note the fascia and soffit condition you can see from the ground, such as peeling paint, dark stains or soft spots, and ask each bidder to list any wood repair as its own line. Mark each downspout spot on a sketch, and say whether its water should hit a splash block, travel through a long extension or drop into an existing underground drain.
Choose one option in each pair before you send the request:
- Hidden hangers screwed through the gutter into the fascia, or spikes driven through ferrules.
- The gutter back tucked under the existing drip edge, or a new drip edge or gutter apron added along the eave.
- Standard downspouts, or larger ones with more outlets on long runs.
- Gutter guards included as a line item, or left off.
- Old gutters, spikes and sealant scraps hauled away, or left for you.
What should my request include?
Use a written scope plus photographs: one per side of the house showing the existing gutter, the fascia behind it and the shingle edge above it. Give runs, downspouts, hangers, guards, wood repair and haul-away their own lines, and ask each bidder to name anything its response omits.
Contact details stay hidden until the homeowner picks a contractor and they confirm the connection.

What should I do before I sign?
Compare the agreement with your written scope, line by line: runs, downspouts, hanger type, any fascia or drip-edge work, a start date, a finish date and when each payment is due. Find out who hauls off the old gutters and who pulls a permit if one applies, then match the business name to your dated lookups.
Federal Trade Commission advice for homeowners, read 15 October 2026, ends its contract checklist with one more step: “And, make sure all blank spaces are filled in.”

Ask whether the crew will run a hose through each run after hanging it and show you every downspout outlet before leaving. If soft fascia turns up once the old gutters come down, get the extra wood work written up as a change order and agreed before work continues, then keep that change order, the signed agreement, your photographs and the dated lookups in one place.
