How many house cleaning bids should I compare?

Get more than one: the FTC’s consumer guidance says "Get multiple estimates." Compare them room by room on the same task list, checking supplies, visit frequency and any deeper first clean.

Key facts

Why do bids for one job differ?

Use a room list to compare house cleaning in Florida by actual operations: floor care, bathroom fixtures, kitchen surfaces and requested appliance interiors. Separate recurring housekeeping from the first deeper visit, and ask what preparation you must finish before the cleaner arrives.

CDC distinguishes cleaning, which removes dirt and most germs, from disinfecting, which kills most germs on surfaces; surfaces should be cleaned before disinfection. Ask what actual operations a proposal describes instead of treating those words as interchangeable service labels.

For your own comparison, translate deep cleaning into named tasks: inside an empty oven, cabinet fronts, baseboards or accessible window tracks, if you want those included. Ask bidders to mark each item included, excluded or awaiting discussion. Do not assume a package name answers the room list.

Specify whether your request is for an occupied home, an empty home before moving in or a move-out visit. Identify rooms to skip, possessions to leave untouched and any areas unavailable during the appointment. Ask whether the proposal assumes that you will clear counters or remove objects from the floor beforehand.

InstaBids gets you competitive written quotes without calls or home visits to bid; contractors never buy leads, and there is no fee during our pilot.

When is a comparison less useful?

Choose room priorities before comparing house cleaning when access or appointment length limits what can be done. An empty move-out kitchen and an occupied bedroom need different instructions; another offer cannot settle which possessions to move or which rooms to omit.

If you need urgent specialist cleanup, contact the relevant service directly and describe the circumstances. Keep that request separate from routine housekeeping. For ordinary cleaning, decide which tasks matter most if you cannot arrange everything before your preferred date; do not ask the company to guess your priorities.

How can I ask several companies the same questions?

Describe house cleaning in a written scope arranged as a room grid that pairs each surface with its requested treatment. Include supply responsibilities, possessions to leave untouched and optional appliance interiors, so the cleaner can respond to specific tasks instead of an undefined deep-clean label.

CDC advises regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, including switches, doorknobs and countertops, and cleaning them after visitors. Ask whether your requested visit includes those touch points. Decide which recurring tasks you want between larger cleaning appointments rather than using room size as the entire specification.

For soft surfaces, CDC discusses suitable cleaning products, laundering where possible and vacuuming carpets and rugs. Distinguish vacuuming from other requested fabric care. Ask whether rugs, drapes or upholstery are part of the proposal, and leave any unrequested specialist treatment outside it.

For electronics, CDC directs readers to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Identify devices you want left untouched and provide relevant instructions for anything included. Do not ask a company to use the same product on every item in a room.

Build a room grid with columns for the first visit, recurring work, supplies and exclusions. In the kitchen row, distinguish cabinet fronts from cabinet interiors. In the bedroom row, separate vacuuming from changing linen. In the bathroom row, name fixtures and surfaces instead of using a single deep-clean box.

Add a priority column if the appointment has a time limit. Put the kitchen and bathroom tasks in your preferred order, then name what can wait. Record whether someone must empty cupboards, move floor clutter or provide fresh linen before work starts; keep those preparations separate from the cleaner’s duties.

Should I ask whether a quotation has a charge?

Ask whether a house cleaning appointment is a walk-through or the first deep clean, and request the booking terms for that specific visit. Decide whether the initial work includes accumulated bathroom buildup, oven interiors or clearing surfaces before recurring housekeeping begins.

A walk-through should settle the room grid: which buildup needs attention, whether cupboards will be empty, and who supplies products or equipment. If the first deep clean is a working appointment, ask for its expected tasks and stopping point. Decide whether you want that single visit even if you do not continue with recurring housekeeping.

For example, place an empty oven interior on the first-visit list and cabinet fronts on the recurring list only if those are your preferences. Ask the company to correct the grid where its proposal differs. Record any access or cancellation terms against the appointment they actually govern, rather than carrying them over from a different service description.

What should my request include?

Describe your house cleaning request with room photographs and a list of surfaces to include or leave untouched. Identify the first visit separately from recurring tasks.

Contact details stay hidden until the homeowner picks a contractor and they confirm the connection.

What should I do when written bids arrive?

Choose between house cleaning bids by what will be finished within the proposed appointment. Check room access, priorities, appliance interiors and first-visit duties, then ask the cleaner to name tasks that would remain if the time limit is reached.

For the kitchen, compare the named surfaces and appliance interiors you actually requested. For bathrooms, look for the fixtures and floor work you listed. For bedrooms, distinguish floor cleaning from changing linen or handling laundry. Leave missing answers open rather than borrowing an inclusion from another company's response.

Use the time-limit leftovers to decide whether another cleaning plan would help. If a proposal reaches its stopping time before the bathroom floor or kitchen counters, ask whether the room order can change. Seek a different arrangement when your priority tasks cannot fit; a second offer with the same undefined deep-clean label adds little.

For any requested disinfection, CDC says to clean surfaces first. Put the cleaning operation ahead of disinfection in the room grid so a proposal does not omit the preparation step.

Read CDC’s household guidance when defining house cleaning tasks for a home: cleaning and disinfecting are separate operations, and fabric care differs from electronics care. Use the cited instructions to make your room grid specific enough for written responses.
