How do you check a home improvement contractor registration in Pennsylvania?

In Pennsylvania, home improvement contractors register with the Office of Attorney General under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, and its public search shows active registrations; the office says registration is not an endorsement of a contractor's competency or skill.

Is a Pennsylvania registration the same as a contractor license?

Not in the sense of a test of skill: the Attorney General's office describes HICPA as a registration law with consumer protection rules, and says outright that registration is not its approval of a contractor's competency or skill.

In our reading, that makes the search a check on registration status, not on workmanship. A result tells you the contractor is on the register; it does not tell you how good the work will be.

What can the Pennsylvania search tell you about the type of work?

Not much yet: the search added a type-of-work field recently, and the office warns that data for it is thin for most existing contractors, so a missing trade on a result is not a finding.

The search page says: "Since the 'Type of Work' field is new, there is limited data for most of existing contractors."

What should you ask a Pennsylvania contractor before you search?

Ask for the contractor's Pennsylvania registration number and the exact business name, search both on the Attorney General's page, and treat the result as a registration check only. These are practical suggestions, not the office's rules.

  1. Ask for the registration number as it will appear on the contract.
  2. Ask for the business name exactly as it is registered.
  3. Search the number, then the name, and read the status on the result.
  4. Ask the contractor directly about past jobs like yours, since the search is not a measure of skill.
  5. Ask your municipality whether your job needs a permit, and who will apply for it.
