How much does siding cost?
United States: homeowner survey
Households in the American Housing Survey that hired out new or replacement siding reported a median of $8,000; the typical range (middle half of 342 American Housing Survey data points, the United States, 2021-2023) was $3,000 to $15,000.
When the household put up the siding itself: a median (117 American Housing Survey data points, the United States, 2021-2023) of $1,000.

What is the siding replacement cost?
The survey item is "Added or replaced siding". It does not record the material, so vinyl, fiber cement and wood are counted together, and a single wall and a whole house sit in the same range.

Most siding is hired out: 74 percent of the siding jobs with a reported cost went to a contractor, more than flooring (63 percent) but fewer than roofing (87 percent).
What does vinyl siding cost to install?
Taking the old siding off opens the wall. ENERGY STAR's insulation guidance says that whenever exterior siding is removed, insulation can be blown into empty wall cavities through holes in the sheathing before the new siding goes on.

The same guidance adds insulating sheathing beneath the new siding in colder climate zones, and defines R-value as the measure of how well insulation resists heat moving through it.

What changes the cost to install siding?
- Old paint: EPA's lead-safe rule covers anyone hired to disturb painted surfaces on a home built before 1978, and painted wood siding is such a surface.

- Owner or crew: households that sided the house themselves reported a much lower median than households that hired it out.
- Doing it alone on an older home: EPA says that if you cannot find out when a home was built, the safest course is to assume the paint has lead and work lead-safe.
