How long does a driveway last?
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) lists 25 years for asphalt pavement and 50 for concrete pavement in its Paving, Curbing and Parking block, multifamily planning figures, not a measured life of a home's driveway (structured on the ASTM E2018-08 outline, no issue date, read 2026-10-17, national, multifamily, n not published by the source).

InstaBids is a written-bid marketplace for home jobs: you, or your AI assistant, describe it once; contractors bid in writing on that scope; you choose who gets your number.
5.3% of US owner-occupied homes had a job coded “Added or replaced driveways or walkways” in the two years before their 2023 interview (Census AHS 2023, read 2026-10-17, n = 28,192, SE 0.2 points), a share computed by InstaBids from the 2023 American Housing Survey (AHS) microdata (original data: U.S. Census Bureau). The survey's definitions take in driveways or walkways “that have been added, repaved, replaced, or improved”, with this example: “An example would be replacing a loose gravel walkway with a permanent composition stone compound.” It “Excludes driveways or walkways that have only been repaired (i.e., resealing or patching).” Work already recorded as MAJOR disaster work is left out under the questionnaire's instruction “please do not include any part of the MAJOR disaster work already reported”. So the share is a rate of driveway or walkway jobs, not the years a driveway lasts.
In our own counts, n is the number of surveyed households behind a share and SE is its standard error, a measure of sampling error, in percentage points.

- HUD's table has no row named driveway, and its own instructions read: “If an observed item is not listed, it should be assigned to the most closely related category.” This page shows these rows from two blocks. Under “Paving, Curbing and Parking”: 25 years for “Asphalt Pavement”, 50 for “Concrete Pavement”, 30 for “Permeable Paving Systems (brick, concrete pavers)” and 15 for “Parking, Gravel Surfaced”. Under “Flatwork (walks, plazas, terraces, patios)”: 25 for “Asphalt”, 50 for “Concrete”, 15 for “Gravel” and 30 for “Permeable Paving (brick, concrete pavers)” (structured on the ASTM E2018-08 outline, no issue date, read 2026-10-17, national, multifamily, n not published by the source). Every one is a planning interval HUD sets for multifamily sites, not a measured life of a home's driveway.
