For homeowners
Types of sod: which grass should you lay?
Choose St. Augustinegrass for shade, among warm-season grasses (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Zoysiagrass for lawns and recreational areas with only moderate traffic (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Bermudagrass for full-sun lawns with drought and traffic (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Centipedegrass for a low-maintenance lawn (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Bahiagrass for home sites on large lots or acreage, or anywhere without an irrigation system (UF/IFAS, Florida); Buffalograss for a low-upkeep lawn from Central to West Texas (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Tall fescue for moderate drought and shade, in North Texas (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010); Kentucky bluegrass for well-drained soils in full sunlight (University of Kentucky, 2024).
The right choice depends on whether your area suits warm-season or cool-season grass, how much shade and foot traffic the lawn gets, how much water you can give it, and which planting material (sod, plugs, sprigs or seed) the grass comes as.
| Type | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| St. Augustinegrass | shade, among warm-season grasses (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | UF/IFAS (Florida): can also be planted as 2-inch plugs, 12 inches apart | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): does not tolerate high traffic; Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): may be killed by severe winters in the northern one-third of Texas |
| Zoysiagrass | lawns and recreational areas with only moderate traffic (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): improved varieties usually require less nitrogen fertilizer | University of Kentucky (2024): from sprigs or plugs, "zoysiagrass may take a year or longer" |
| Bermudagrass | full-sun lawns with drought and traffic (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | University of Kentucky (2024): from sprigs or plugs, can be fully grown in one to two months | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): many hybrid varieties need more frequent mowing and more nitrogen fertilizer |
| Centipedegrass | a low-maintenance lawn (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): "It is best established with sod, as seed establishment is much slower than with other grasses." | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): does not tolerate traffic or prolonged drought |
| Bahiagrass | home sites on large lots or acreage, or anywhere without an irrigation system (UF/IFAS, Florida) | UF/IFAS (Florida): planted from sod, it establishes rapidly with fewer openings for weeds | UF/IFAS (Florida): "Most bahiagrass sod is harvested from pastures and may contain difficult to control weeds."; UF/IFAS (Florida): does not form uniform sod slabs, and the sod sometimes falls apart when it is laid |
| Buffalograss | a low-upkeep lawn from Central to West Texas (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | no official source names one | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): has little tolerance of shade; Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): easily invaded by weeds and other grasses in high-rainfall East Texas or when watered excessively |
| Tall fescue | moderate drought and shade, in North Texas (Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas, 2010) | University of Kentucky (2024): tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass sod can be installed almost anytime except midwinter, when soil is frozen | Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): needs more summer irrigation than warm-season grasses; UT Extension (Tennessee, 2007): many sod producers do not like to market cool-season sod in July and August |
| Kentucky bluegrass | well-drained soils in full sunlight (University of Kentucky, 2024) | University of Kentucky (2024): fine texture, good resiliency and a good spreading habit; University of Kentucky (2024): tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass sod can be installed almost anytime except midwinter, when soil is frozen | UT Extension (Tennessee, 2007): should not be seeded in spring, and its seeds germinate very slowly; Texas A&M AgriLife (Texas, 2010): there are no growers of Kentucky bluegrass sod in Texas; UT Extension (Tennessee, 2007): many sod producers do not like to market cool-season sod in July and August |
