For homeowners
Types of window glass: which one fits each window?
Choose Insulated glazing (two or more panes) for lowering the window's U-factor, its rate of non-solar heat flow; Gas fill (argon or krypton) for reducing heat loss in colder climates, together with low-e coatings; Low-e coating for controlling heat transfer by reducing the infrared radiation the glass lets through; Spectrally selective low-e coating for a window with a low U-factor and SHGC but a high VT (visible light); Heat-absorbing tint for absorbing a large share of the incoming solar radiation; Reflective coating for cutting glare.
The right choice depends on your climate, which way each window faces, and how much daylight you want to keep.
| Type | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insulated glazing (two or more panes) | lowering the window's U-factor, its rate of non-solar heat flow | the panes are spaced apart and sealed, leaving an insulating air space | DOE: "it also lowers the SHGC" (the solar radiation the window admits) |
| Gas fill (argon or krypton) | reducing heat loss in colder climates, together with low-e coatings | the inert gas between the panes resists heat flow more than air does | needs insulated glazing: makers fill the space between the panes with the gas |
| Low-e coating | controlling heat transfer by reducing the infrared radiation the glass lets through | as a film on the inside of a window, it keeps heat from radiating out (DOE, 2022); usually applied in the factory, but some low-e films are sold for do-it-yourselfers; applied correctly, low-e films reduce fabric fading and increase comfort | no official source names one |
| Spectrally selective low-e coating | a window with a low U-factor and SHGC but a high VT (visible light) | filters out 40% to 70% of the heat normally transmitted through insulated glass while allowing the full amount of light through; on tinted glass, it can either increase or decrease solar gains, as the look and climate call for | no official source names one |
| Heat-absorbing tint | absorbing a large share of the incoming solar radiation | reduces the SHGC, the visible light (VT) and glare; blue and green tints let more visible light through than other tint colors, with slightly reduced heat transfer | the tint does not reduce the U-factor: some heat still passes through by conduction and re-radiation; gray and bronze tints are not spectrally selective, so they cut both light and heat; in hot climates DOE says to avoid black-tinted glass, which absorbs more light than heat |
| Reflective coating | cutting glare | also reduces the window's SHGC | blocks more light than heat; the reduced cooling energy demand can be offset by the need for additional electric lighting |
