Can I get a Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant?

SAH concerns the permanent home the applicant owns or will own. VA requires a qualifying service-connected disability; its list includes limb loss, certain severe burns and specified vision loss. The agency determines whether the stated disability requirements are met.

Can I get a Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant?

SHA permits ownership by the applicant or a family member. VA lists loss or loss of use of both hands, certain severe burns, and certain respiratory or breathing injuries among its qualifying service-connected disabilities. The permanent-home requirement remains part of the application.

Do I have to use the total grant amount this year?

The VA page describes reuse of SAH or SHA assistance over the recipient’s lifetime rather than a requirement to spend the entire grant immediately. The published limit is in the agency quotation below; annual maximum amounts may change.

“We may adjust the total maximum amount each year based on the cost of construction. You may receive up to the current total maximum amount for the last year you use the grant.”

Can I get a Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) grant?

TRA addresses a family member’s home where the applicant lives temporarily. VA requires eligibility for SAH or SHA and says ownership of the temporary home is unnecessary. This differs from SAH’s permanent-home ownership requirement.

“You’re living temporarily in a family member’s home that needs changes to meet your needs (you don’t have to own the house), and You qualify for an SAH or SHA grant”
